Life Summary
1946: Kara is born on Krypton 16 years before her cousin, Kal.
1959: Kal Zor-El is born on Krypton and sent to Earth. His homeworld, Krypton, is soon thereafter destroyed, though one of its cities (Kandor) and thousands of its people (scattered, most unaware of the others) survive in various ways and places. Kara at this time is 16, and is sent in her own pod to watch over Kal, but because she is sent later, the explosion of Krypton alters the trajectory of her pod, resulting in it being trapped in a Kryptonite asteroid. There, she remains unconscious and in suspended animation while Kal's pod reaches Earth and opens.

1992: Superman (Clark; Kal), now 33, and Doomsday fight, both dying from their wounds.
2012: 40, Kara does her best to help out in the aftermath of the Nuclear Independence Day attacks across America, though her powers do her little good because most of the victims are blind or dying of radiation sickness. For the first time in her life, the stubborn Kara loses her edge and slips into a severe depression.
2013: 41 years old (though still appearing to be in her 20s), Kara flies into low orbit as the Inisfreeans kick off their Rapture Campaign, changing the face of the Earth as they wipe out nearly 100% of humanity. At first, she attempts to intervene, but soon realizes that it is a global extinction-level-event, and her powers for some reason can do nothing to save those who are scheduled for extermination. Weeping in Space, her tears freeze and drift away, and she floats in silence with a view of most of a whole hemisphere, giving up finding a single city that is not being leveled (Nuuk being more of a town, population ~15,000; city status typically comes at 300,000 people). The view triggers emotionally painful flashbacks to when she was ordered to leave her homeworld alone, knowing it was soon to explode right behind her; once again, she is alone as an entire civilization and world are reduced to ruin, and, as before, even with all her gifts, she is powerless to stop it.
Eventually, she hears one of the telepathic messages broadcast by the Inisfreeans to the whole world, and is met by them and taken to their hidden city. At first she is furious with them, and is placed in a Kryptonite slave collar, then dosed with trace amounts of that element until she has heard their side of the story; it was the only way to get her to listen. "Their people were not worth saving. Yours are," they gently tell her. After realizing the validity of their points, she goes quiet, sullen, and looks down and to the corner, lost in thought for hours. She eventually warms up to them, and even joins Inisfree's Council of Elders, representing her entire race as more and more of them start to turn up across the galaxy (and later introduces many of them to Inisfree, helping some of them become Congresswomen there). Exposed to the perfected healing energies and other aspects of Inisfree and its people, her appearance gradually returns to that of a 16 year old girl, and stays there for the rest of time.
